Severe thunderstorms possible in Massachusetts, heat wave continues – NBC Boston

The end of this heat wave is near. We’ll almost reach our record high of 98 degrees in Boston on Thursday before the storms come to chase the heat away and bring some relief on Friday – just in time for the Celtics’ victory parade.

Humidity will be oppressive again. Heat indices – what temperature and humidity feel like – will rise below 37 degrees in many cities today. If you must be outside for long periods, take it easy and relax throughout the day. Drink plenty of fluids, seek shade, take frequent breaks and cool down quickly in air-conditioned spaces.

Also watch for strong thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening. These storms will engulf our hot, humid air and some may become severe with strong, gusty winds, intense lightning and possibly hail. They will extend to the coast and continue into the late evening as well.

The forecast for Friday still looks pretty good. It will be cooler, a little less humid and shrouded in some cloud at times. Showers look to be pushed west of Worcester as the cold front moves west from the back door. Sea breezes will keep temperatures between 25 and nearly 27 degrees on the coast and 27 to 29 degrees away from the coast. Saturday will see more clouds and a slight chance of showers. Temperatures will stay between 25 and nearly 27 degrees again for many.

Heat and humidity will return by Sunday, but conditions will not be the same as now, with temperatures rising above 30 degrees again as we await the arrival of another front with storms in the late afternoon.

Stay safe and cool!
