Almada’s late strike seals Atlanta United’s 0-1 win over DC United

Atlanta United began its back-to-back road games with a 0-1 victory over DC United on Wednesday night at Audi Field, highlighted by a late second-half goal from Thiago Almada and a strong defensive performance.

The match started with Benteke scoring the first shot on goal in the sixth minute with a header. DC United dominated the opening minutes, but Atlanta United quickly responded with attempts from Dax McCarty and Xande Silva. Despite several close chances, the first half ended in a draw with possession favoring DC United (55%).

DC United appeared to take the lead in the 51st minute through a Mateusz Klich strike, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Atlanta United then created a strong chance in the 60th minute, but Brooks Lennon’s shot went over the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless.

The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Almada, starting from a wide position, deftly maneuvered several defenders and fired a shot into the top corner, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Tyler Miller.

Atlanta United’s defense, which had struggled to maintain its lead this season, held firm. Goalkeeper Brad Guzan made critical saves in the 86th and 88th minutes, including a header from Benteke. Derrick Williams also made a crucial defensive play in stoppage time to preserve the clean sheet.
