He calls the shooting targeted and domestic and believes it all started with a verbal argument.Police said the suspect left the apartment after the shooting but was arrested a short time later in the Woodlawn neighborhood. The children’s pregnant mother was taken to a hospital for observation.According to Birmingham Fire & Rescue, it happened before 12:45 p.m. on 25th Street North. That’s in the Central City neighborhood near Marconi Park. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found a dead 15-year-old girl inside. Thurmond calls the shooting heinous and sad, as these children were just trying to enjoy their summer and the girl’s life was taken by a senseless act. “We have someone here who is so angry that he feels he has to take the violence into his own hands and shoot into an apartment, and now an innocent life is lost,” he said. “This is just absolutely ridiculous. We cannot keep seeing these things in our city. They are targeted. These are people who know each other. It’s really sad that these things continue to happen in our city.” Police said this is not the first time they have been called to this apartment, but it is unbelievable to know people who can’t get along and can’t solve their problems without a gun. “You have a 15-year-old girl who is dead,” Thurmond said. “You have a 5-year-old boy. Is his leg ever going to heal and be normal like it was before? You have a mother who has to live with this, and you have a human being who is going to face justice, and we’ll see what comes out of this. His freedom is in jeopardy. Was it all worth it? No, it wasn’t.” The suspect is serving 48 hours in jail while police work with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. A 15-year-old girl is dead and a 5-year-old boy was shot in the leg in an apartment complex on Wednesday.

A suspect, the mother’s ex-boyfriend, fired shots into an apartment, according to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond. He described the shooting as targeted and domestic and believes it all started with a verbal argument.

According to police, the suspect left the apartment after the shooting but was arrested a short time later in the Woodlawn neighborhood.

The children’s pregnant mother was taken to a hospital for observation.

According to Birmingham Fire & Rescue, it happened before 12:45 p.m. on 25th Street North, a downtown neighborhood near Marconi Park. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found a dead 15-year-old girl inside.

Thurmond calls the shooting disgusting and sad because the children were just enjoying their summer and the girl’s life was taken by a senseless act.

“We have someone here who is so angry that he feels he has to take the violence into his own hands and shoot into an apartment, and now an innocent life is lost,” he said. “This is just absolutely ridiculous. We cannot keep seeing these things in our city. They are targeted. These are people who know each other. It’s really sad that these things continue to happen in our city.”

Police said it was not the first time they had been called to the apartment, but it was unimaginable to know people who could not cope and solve their problems without a weapon.

“There’s a 15-year-old girl who’s dead,” Thurmond said. “There’s a 5-year-old boy. Will his leg ever heal and be normal again? There’s a mother who has to live with this, and there’s a human being who’s going to be tried, and we’ll see what happens. His freedom is in jeopardy. Was it all worth it? No, it wasn’t.”

The suspect will be held in jail for 48 hours while police work with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
