Shooting on Juneteenth in Oakland: Police say at least 4 people were shot near Lake Merritt

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) – At least four people were shot during a Juneteenth celebration in Lake Merritt, Oakland, on Wednesday night, police said.

According to officials, Oakland police and fire departments responded around 9 p.m. to a report of multiple shootings at Grand and Euclid avenues, where a large crowd had gathered.

ABC7 News spoke to a witness who was at the scene.

“We were all celebrating, there were sideshows, a few fights – and then we all thought we heard fireworks, so we ran away,” said witness Tamia Robinson. “The next thing you know, another ‘boom, boom, boom, boom, boom’ from across the lake. We’re coming down here, walking, and my sister runs across the street where she sees one of her friends lying there.”

According to police, four gunshot victims were taken to a hospital. Their condition is currently unknown.

Several other injuries were also reported. Authorities believe the incident may have been a “mass casualty event.”

The public is asked to avoid the area of ​​I-580 at Grand Avenue.
