State Treasurer Dale Folwell is under investigation for using state vehicles

According to search warrants, North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell is accused of using his state vehicles for personal errands.

Folwell used the cars for non-work-related trips in 2022, including to a country club, a hot yoga studio, the Biltmore Estate and dozens of other stops.

Folwell is not seeking re-election after his failed bid for governor.

No charges have been filed against him and his office says he is cooperating with the investigation.

Former state auditor Beth Wood pleaded guilty to illegal private use of a public vehicle in December 2023.

She received a year’s probation and paid over $1,000 in restitution for the misdemeanor charge. She resigned the same day.

Statement from Folwell:

“We are grateful that the media has brought these details to light as we have been asking for information and clarity for nearly a year. During the course of this review we have provided pages of documentation. We look forward to continuing to work with the Department of Motor Fleet Management to resolve this issue satisfactorily. I am a constant treasurer and am known for transparency. I am always thinking about how I can do things better and more efficiently in the interest of taxpayers, which includes the use of the state car.”
