2 people attacked and stabbed by 5 masked men after graduating from high school in New York

Two people were injured when five masked men attacked them after a New York high school graduation ceremony on Wednesday, cutting one person’s ear and another’s leg, school officials said.

The attack outside a sports complex at Hofstra University on Long Island occurred as graduates of Hempstead and Uniondale high schools were leaving the facility with their families, the school association said in a statement.

The statement described the person whose leg was injured as a guest of a student. That student intervened and was injured in the ear, the statement said.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital. Their condition was initially unclear.

Nassau County police said they responded to a report of a possible attack on the Hofstra campus at 4:20 p.m. It was not immediately clear whether the attackers were arrested.

The attack is believed to be related to a domestic dispute, and everyone attending the ceremony went through magnetometers, the schools said in a statement.

“We emphasize that this incident occurred outside of the graduation ceremony venue,” the statement said. “Our security team is working with Nassau County Police and Hofstra Public Safety officials.”

A spokeswoman for Hofstra University said the campus was safe and referred further questions to police.

Further details about the incident were not immediately available.
