MVPD makes arrest after local shooting – Centralia Morning Sentinel

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon police have arrested one suspect and are searching for a second suspect in connection with a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the 2000 block of Logan Street.

Authorities said an adult male was shot and taken to Crossroads Community Hospital for treatment. A report on his condition was not immediately available Wednesday, but authorities said he suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower extremities.

The initial investigation indicates that the shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Logan Street around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18. Mount Vernon Police were notified around 2:40 p.m. that a man was admitted to the emergency room at Crossroads Community Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound, prompting the start of the investigation.

Mount Vernon Police Chief Robert Brands said investigators have identified two people of interest in the case, an adult male and a juvenile male. The adult male, Gabriel Ellinger, 18, of Sesser, was arrested shortly after the shooting, and police are continuing to search for the juvenile suspect. A patrol officer reportedly spotted Ellinger at the corner of 17th Street and Broadway at 3:18 p.m. Tuesday and arrested him without incident.

“With the help of several witnesses and our surveillance cameras, we were able to quickly identify the suspects. One of our patrol officers was able to quickly locate the adult male suspect and arrest him without incident,” Brands said.

At this time, no information is being released about the possible motive for the shooting or which suspect is believed to have fired the weapon that injured the victim.

“We are still in the early stages of the investigation,” Brands said, later adding, “We are still investigating the details of the actual shooter.”

Ellinger was arrested at the Jefferson County Justice Center on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. Official charges have not been announced. The Jefferson County Courthouse was closed Wednesday for the Juneteenth holiday.

This is an ongoing and active MVPD investigation, Brands said. The MVPD received assistance from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in this case.
