Heat warning and air quality alert issued as heat wave continues in metro Detroit area

4Warn WeatherHEAT WARNING: All of Southeast Michigan until 10:00 p.m. Thursday night. Heat index values well above 86 degrees and possibly below 90 degrees are expected for another day Thursday.

AIR QUALITY WARNING: Parts of southeast Michigan will experience elevated ozone levels through Thursday due to heat and humidity.

After several hot and humid days across the region, the heat and humidity are forecast to continue for the rest of the week and into next weekend before we finally get a break from our first summer heatwave.

Due to the heat and humidity as well as a cold front approaching from the west, the probability of some thunderstorms will remain below the forecast until late in the evening hours on Wednesday evening.

Some of the thunderstorms could be strong to severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of the region at a low risk (2 out of 5) on the severe weather scale. Damaging winds and heavy precipitation would be the main dangers in storms moving from northern Indiana and northern Ohio into Lower Michigan.

Otherwise, it will be warm and humid on Wednesday, with temperatures falling to over 20 degrees overnight.

Thursday

We’ll do it all again on Thursday. I’m particularly blessed with sunshine and clouds, but it’s hot and humid, with highs well below 30 degrees and a heat index of nearly 38 degrees.

Also, some afternoon and evening thunderstorms, like those we have experienced over the last day or two, could increase the storm pressure and possibly lead to severe thunderstorms.

Weekend forecast

Our streak of 90° temperatures will continue through the first half of the weekend, with a risk of thunderstorms remaining for Friday and Saturday.

Temperatures will drop to just above 30 degrees by Sunday afternoon and evening, with some rain showers possible as a cold front finally moves across the area, taking the heatwave with it.

Next week

Looking ahead to Monday evening, when the Ford Fireworks begin, the dry weather will finally stick around, with lower humidity levels. Highs will be around 30 degrees on Monday afternoon, and will drop to around 21 degrees by the time the fireworks begin on Monday evening.

There is a chance of thunderstorms again on Tuesday before dry weather sets in on Wednesday, mid-next week. Maximum temperatures will reach the upper 30s on Tuesday and fall to the mid 30s by Wednesday.
