Sister of Laurel County teenager killed in accident speaks out

LAUREL CO., Ky (LEX 18) — An ATV accident killed 13-year-old Caleb Morgan Tuesday afternoon. Brooke Brummett, one of Caleb’s sisters, was at work when she received a message from her sister-in-law about the accident.

“When I got there, she told me he had been unconscious for 30 minutes,” Brummett said. “I went to the scene and they confirmed he was dead at that point.”

Morgan was out with a friend, riding his quad bike up and down Nineva Road in Laurel County.

“They took turns driving,” Brummett said. “When the accident happened, his friend was driving, and when he tried to brake, he lost control of the ATV and went over an embankment, and the impact broke Caleb’s neck.”

Caleb had four brothers and two sisters, and he had a connection with each of them.

Brummett said: “He was my little brother. He was my baby. He was 13. He was just a funny, lively, outgoing little guy. He was always a joker. I really don’t know what life is going to be like without him.”

According to Brummett, Morgan hasn’t had the quad for very long.

“It was actually pretty new. He’d only had it for a couple of weeks,” she said. “He stayed on it. He loved it. At two, three in the morning he’d be sitting outside on it playing with the light strips.”

When asked what Morgan liked most about it, Brummett said, “Probably just the freedom. Just the wind in his hair.”

Brummett shared her feelings in the moments following the loss of her brother.

“I just wanted to tear the world apart, rip it apart at the seams. It was devastating. I’m still so numb. I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet.”

Brummett said she has since heard from countless community members.

“He was loved by many,” she said.

Caleb Morgan’s funeral is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Bowling Funeral Home in London.
