Consumer warning for Pittsburgh supermarket after inspector finds rodent droppings

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A consumer alert has been issued at a Pittsburgh supermarket after an inspector found rodent droppings.

The Allegheny County Health Department issued a consumer alert for Oak Hill Market in Pittsburgh’s Terrace Village neighborhood following an inspection Tuesday. The inspector found more than a dozen violations after receiving a complaint.

The report said rodent droppings were too numerous to count in corners and under chip shelves. The inspector noted a bag of nibbled cheese curls and evidence of nesting sites in walls. The facility is treated weekly, but the inspector said pest control is inadequate.

Several violations also affected the slush machine, which, according to the inspector, had not been disinfected.

The report noted several low-risk violations, such as dirty toilets and grease deposits.

The Allegheny County Health Department points out that high-risk violations, such as failure to sanitize the slush machine, can directly lead to foodborne illness or injury.

A consumer alert means that an establishment does not meet minimum food safety standards and conditions may pose a risk to public health, the Department of Health explains on its website.

When the consumer alert is lifted, the health department’s website will be updated.
