Metro Atlanta Events, Celebrations and More – PeachtreeTV

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Juneteenth isn’t just any other day: It’s Juneteenth!

The Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the United States, took effect in 1863. But in territories controlled by the Confederacy, freedom did not come until much later, according to the National Museum of African-American history and culture.

On June 19, 1865, about two months after the end of the Civil War, Union troops arrived in Texas and announced that more than 250,000 people were now free. This day is now known as Juneteenth, established as a federal holiday in 2021.
