Man dies in Wadsworth shooting, police officers placed on leave

Shortly after police arrived at the scene, they reported that shots had been fired.

WADSWORTH, Ohio – We’re following breaking news from Wadsworth, where the Ohio Bureau of Investigation responded to a fatal shooting in the 200 block of Durling Drive.

According to Wadsworth police, officers arrived at the scene around 9:02 p.m. Tuesday “due to a report of a male suspect armed with a handgun threatening suicide in his backyard.”

Shortly after police arrived at the apartment, officers reported that shots were fired. However, the Wadsworth police press release does not indicate whether the man was shot.

According to police, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is currently not being released.

“It is the policy of the Wadsworth Police Department that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducts the investigation of officer-involved shootings,” a Wadsworth Police Department press release states. “For this reason, the BCI was requested and they traveled to the scene to begin the investigation.”

The officers involved were placed on leave in accordance with department policy.

“Comments on social media that this incident was related to the Blue Tip parade or festival or that there was a potential threat to the festival are false,” police stated. “None of these claims are accurate and at no time was there a threat to the Blue Tip festivities.”
