Cyclist dies after collision with live power lines in North Park

Allegheny County Police are investigating after a bicyclist died after apparently riding into downed power lines in North Park Tuesday night. County dispatch was notified of the incident at around 8:22 p.m. on Pearce Mill Road near Olympia Grove. Police, firefighters and paramedics found a man caught between the lines. Emergency responders were initially unable to reach the man because the lines were live. Duquesne Light Company crews arrived at the scene to shut off power. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been determined. A WTAE team on the scene stayed away from the investigation, so crews with lighting equipment searched the area. Police have cordoned off the portion of the trail where the lines run, as well as the trail’s main entrance in Olympia Grove. A news release from Allegheny County police said preliminary information said the county’s 9-1-1 emergency dispatch was notified at 8:40 a.m. of a “report of dangling lines and smoke on the trail.” County police, fire, EMS and parks departments arrived in the area and determined the lines belonged to Duquesne Light. The company was notified of the dangling lines at 8:51 a.m., according to the department’s news release. The news release did not indicate whether Duquesne Light personnel responded Tuesday morning. County police said police and fire departments cordoned off the trail by placing caution tape near where the lines crossed the trail, as well as caution tape at the trail’s main entrance in Olympia Grove. This incident followed a new wave of storms that hit primarily north of Pittsburgh Tuesday night. Trees and power lines were knocked down by the high winds. Allegheny County police are investigating after a cyclist apparently crashed into downed power lines in North Park on Tuesday evening and died.

The county dispatch center was notified of the incident on Pearce Mill Road near Olympia Grove at around 8:22 p.m. Police, firefighters and paramedics found a man lying between the power lines.

Because of the live power lines, rescue workers were initially unable to reach the man. Crews from the Duquesne Light Company arrived on scene to cut off power to the area.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been established.

A WTAE team on site was kept well away from the investigation, where teams with light equipment searched the area. Police have cordoned off the portion of the trail where the wires run, as well as the trail’s main entrance in Olympia Grove.

A press release from Allegheny County Police said the county’s 9-1-1 emergency number was notified at 8:40 a.m. of a “report of downed wires and smoke in the path.”

County police, fire, EMS and park maintenance crews arrived on scene and determined the lines belonged to Duquesne Light. The company was notified of the downed lines at 8:51 a.m., the department’s news release said.

The press release did not indicate whether Duquesne Light personnel responded Tuesday morning.

County police said police and firefighters closed the trail by placing caution tape near where the lines crossed the trail, as well as caution tape at the trail’s main entrance at Olympia Grove.

This incident followed a new wave of storms that hit mainly north of Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening, with trees and power lines being knocked down by the strong winds.
