Shooting in Westchester Park leads to arrest and triggers community meeting

LAPD pursues suspect after shooting, council member reacts

An LAPD spokesperson confirmed that a disturbing incident occurred in Westchester Park around 7:03 p.m. last night. The spokesperson stated that a call came in with reports of gunshots in Lincoln and Manchester. The LAPD responded to open a shooting investigation after witnesses heard approximately 15 gunshots. No injuries were reported.

In response to the situation, LAPD officers arrived at the scene and initiated pursuit of the suspect. The suspect threw a rifle from the vehicle while attempting to flee. Police were able to successfully apprehend the suspect on Kentwood Avenue, north of Firebrand Street. According to the LAPD spokesperson, no further information is available regarding the suspect’s identity or the incident.

11th Ward Councilwoman Traci Park issued a statement via social media following the incident: “I just met with the LAPD in Westchester Park and wanted to share some news with the surrounding community. Officers are actively investigating and combing the area. One suspect is already in custody; fortunately, no injuries have been reported. As you all know, Westchester Park is home to our library and senior center, and my team and I work from our office there every day, so this is a very personal matter for me. I am deeply grateful to the LAPD for their quick response and initial arrest. This violence is completely unacceptable, and I will continue to work with the Westchester community to ensure the park is safe and accessible to all. I will provide further updates as information becomes available.”

Today, Traci Park’s office issued a second statement regarding a town hall meeting that will be held later this week, on Thursday, June 20: “Following last night’s incident in Westchester Park, we are holding a joint meeting with the LAPD at LAX Police Headquarters this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss community safety concerns. The meeting will be held at 9160 Loyola Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Your safety is our top priority. See you there!”
