An incident report filed by the Dunwoody Police Department revealed extensive and unsuccessful life-saving efforts by school officials, emergency responders and medical personnel on a Dunwoody High School student who died on May 6.

The student, 15-year-old Mia Dieguez, died after allegedly taking a fentanyl-laced Percocet given to her by another student, according to her family. However, police and school officials have not confirmed her cause of death. A minor, reportedly a classmate of Dieguez, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

A report filed by Officer Michael Shaw, obtained by Rough Draft through an open records request, said he arrived at the school at 12:48 p.m., citing an unconscious student who was not breathing.

Upon his arrival, Shaw was taken to a classroom where Dieguez lay on the floor and was being attended to by the school nurse and school resource officers.

Shaw said he was told an automated external defibrillator was deployed as well as two doses of Narcan, a drug often used to reverse the effects of an overdose by blocking the effects of opioids.

“When I examined Mia’s wrist, I couldn’t find a pulse. I immediately began CPR before the DeKalb County Fire Department arrived and took over life-saving measures,” Shaw said in his report.

An ambulance also arrived on scene shortly afterward, Shaw said in his report.

Shaw said he spoke with Dieguez’s teacher, who said she had come into the classroom earlier that day feeling “unwell and sick.”

The teacher also noted that Dieguez “usually slept in class, and when class started, Mia put her head on her desk.”

After I asked to go to the nurses office to get water, the 10th respondedTh The grader returned to class, sat at another desk and “rested her head again for the duration of class.”

The teacher, the report says, assumed Dieguez was asleep. It wasn’t until the lunch bell rang that students who tried to wake her noticed “her yellowing skin and shortness of breath,” the report said.

According to the report, the school was placed on lockdown while staff cared for Dieguez.

The victim, accompanied by Shaw, was transported by ambulance to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. Further attempts to revive Dieguez proved unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at 1:40 p.m

Shaw’s report said the investigation had been turned over to DeKalb County School Police, which had not yet responded to messages left by Rough Draft and an open records request.

Dieguez’s family has started a GoFundMe program to help fund her funeral, which will take place at a later date. As of May 8, it had surpassed its $20,000 target.
