Weather warning: Heatwave continues | WETM

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – The heat advisory officially went into effect Tuesday and will last until at least Thursday. Temperatures in Elmira shot up to at least 104° on Tuesday, and even without a heat index, the air temperature in the shade is nothing to sneeze at, hovering around 90° across the board. We didn’t break the daily record of 100°, but we’ll probably break the record of 93° at the airport on Wednesday.

All Juneteenth celebrations should include plenty of opportunities for water breaks and shade, as sun and heat will play a role in the festivities.

The temperature in the sun (also called the heat index) will feel like 99° to 105° through Thursday. It will remain dangerously hot for the next few days, so it’s extremely important to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen thoroughly if you’re going to be outdoors for long periods of time.

The heat could also increase the severity of thunderstorms over the next few days, so stay indoors when you hear thunder.
