Two dead after accident on I-44 in southwest Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Two people were killed in a traffic accident on I-44 in southwest Oklahoma City early Tuesday morning.

“It’s just sad. It’s terrible,” said Tomi Bonar.

Bonar told KFOR that she was meeting her boyfriend on a trail along I-44 near Southwest 29th when he ran toward her in a panic, asking for help.

“He asked me for a flashlight,” Bonar said. “There was a woman trapped in her vehicle.”

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a southbound vehicle left the road around 1 a.m. and struck a pole.

“It is unknown if and how many times the vehicle rolled over. However, upon arrival the vehicle was on its side,” said OHP Trooper Preston Cox. “The passenger and driver were both in the vehicle.”

Police said the driver died at the scene of the accident.

While Bonor’s friend freed the passenger.

“He broke the window and got her out,” Bonar said. “After he got her out of the car, she asked for a hug and he hugged her. He turned around to see if anyone was coming and she ran to cross the traffic. Car after car rammed her.”

The woman was killed, leaving Bonar and her boyfriend devastated.

“He’s traumatized,” Bonar said. “He feels like it’s his fault for getting her out of the car, but he had to do it. He did what he could.”

According to Trooper Cox, the driver of the car that hit the woman did not stop.

“If you are involved in an accident in the state of Oklahoma, you have to stay there,” Cox said.

According to Cox, it is too early to know whether charges will be filed against the driver.
