A Lawrence man originally charged with attempted murder in a domestic incident was found guilty of two lesser felonies instead as part of a plea agreement Tuesday.

The charges against Shane Jamarr White, 46, were that he attempted to stab a 73-year-old man on May 31, 2022, and a 76-year-old man attempted to intervene and was injured. The 73-year-old man was not injured, police said at the time, and the 76-year-old’s injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening and not caused by the knife, the Journal-World reported.

White was originally charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery, but on Tuesday he pleaded no contest to attempted aggravated assault and aggravated battery as part of a plea agreement. The attempted murder charge was dropped, as were seven counts of criminal damage to property for allegedly damaging the tires of several vehicles between February and April 2022.

Judge Amy Hanley accepted White’s plea and scheduled his sentencing for August 8.

White’s attorney, Dakota Loomis, said the agreement recommended a sentence of 51 months, or 4.25 years, in prison. The state, represented by Assistant District Attorney Adam Carey, is not requiring the court to find that the crime was committed with a deadly weapon; that way, White would not have to register as a violent offender.

White has been in custody since his arrest and is being held on $100,000 bail. Loomis said that while in custody, White was briefly at Larned State Hospital to regain his mental capacity.

According to Kansas Department of Corrections records, White has been convicted of theft and burglary in Douglas County since 1999.
