Tulsa police officer arrested for drunk driving

A Tulsa police officer is free on bail after being arrested off-duty for drunken driving.

Body camera video shows Bixby police arresting Officer Derrick Alexander after he allegedly drove on the rim of one of his tires, sending up sparks. Alexander has been with the TPD for 30 years.

The police report on Alexander states that his rim scraped the ground so hard that it gouged the asphalt. Police say he stumbled, slurred his words and smelled of alcohol.

Video shows Bixby police stopping Alexander late Monday night in a neighborhood near 131st Street and Memorial. According to police, Alexander’s car was missing a rear tire and the front of the car was heavily damaged.

Police officer: “Good day. Would you please do me a favor and get out of the vehicle for me?”

Policeman: “Turn around and look at me, buddy. How much have you had to drink tonight? You can’t what?”

Alexander: “I can’t tell you that.”

Policeman: “You can’t tell me?”

Alexander: “Two drinks.”

Policeman: “Two drinks? When?”

Policeman: “The reason I stopped you is because you’re missing a couple of tires, buddy.”

The arrest report states the Bixby officer heard a loud scraping noise, saw Alexander driving, and when the officer stopped Alexander, he attempted to get out of the car. The report states Alexander told police he had two drinks and refused to take a breathalyzer and a breathalyzer test.

Police officer: “I don’t know him, but he’s TPD. He was rolling on rims. Looks like he hit something.”

Police officer: “His bumper is completely broken and he is missing two tires. He probably just drove off the road because there is a lot of dirt under the vehicle.”

Police followed the scratch marks on the sidewalk and found Alexander’s tires several blocks away.

The Tulsa Police Department recently posted about Alexander on Facebook, stating that Alexander has dedicated his career to mentoring and training children.

Alexander is a school resource officer for the Gilcrease Division and a volunteer football coach for Monroe Demonstration School.

Tulsa police say they cannot comment on the arrest, but say an internal investigation is currently underway.
