Weather in Houston: schools closed on Wednesday, June 19

With the threat of flooding from a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico, there are some cancellations.

HOUSTON — As the Gulf tropical system strengthens and moves toward Mexico, it is expected to cause coastal flooding in Southeast Texas.

  • A tropical storm warning was issued from the San Luis Pass south to the Rio Grande, the National Weather Service said.
  • The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flooding warning for the Harris Coast, Bolivar Peninsula, Brazoria Coast and Galveston Island until 1 a.m. Thursday.
  • There is a flood watch for Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Brazoria, Washington, Colorado, Austin, Waller, Wharton, Jackson, Matagorda and Liberty counties from 7 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday evening.
  • A tropical storm watch has been issued for coastal waters from the Bolivar Peninsula to Matagorda Bay through Thursday morning. Very strong winds will cause dangerous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

Facing the threat of flooding, some school districts are expected to cancel classes Wednesday. We will update this list as necessary.
