1 dead and 2 injured after hit-and-run in southeast DC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said one man was killed and two people were injured in a hit-and-run accident early Monday morning.

Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that on June 17, just before 1 a.m., a Nissan Altima was traveling southwest in the 5700 block of Southern Avenue, SE, when the driver allegedly entered the intersection through a red light. At the same time, a Buick Encore was traveling east on Central Avenue, SE and also entered the intersection.

According to police, the Nissan crashed into the front of the Buick. The driver of the Buick then fled the scene of the accident.

The driver and a passenger of the Nissan were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to MPD, a second passenger in the Nissan, identified as 43-year-old Damien Dempsey,, from the southeast, was also taken to hospital, where he died.
