‘Exorcism sex’ fanatic jailed again for attempted rape

A 67-year-old sex offender previously imprisoned for “exorcism sex” was sentenced yesterday to 9 1/2 years in prison for attempting to rape an 11-year-old girl in 2019, just 18 months after his release from prison.

Chow Kam-wah, a decoration worker, was tried in court on October 21, 2019, for raping the girl named X, but was acquitted by a seven-member jury. However, they unanimously ruled to convict Chow of attempted rape. He pleaded not guilty before the trial.

The Supreme Court concluded that Chow was found guilty in 2010 of three counts of incitement by false pretenses for having sex with his 19-year-old goddaughter three times under the guise of “exorcism,” and one count of rape. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison and released in March 2018.

In yesterday’s verdict, Judge Anna Lai Yuen-kee refused to reduce the prison term, saying the details of the case were almost like a rape case. The judge stressed that the crime was serious because Chow was 50 years older than the girl.

Chow exposed the victim to the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases because he did not use any protection when committing the crime, Lai stated.

The victim still lives in extreme fear and anxiety. This fear has prevented the now 16-year-old from developing intimate relationships with the opposite sex, Lai added.

The girl suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and a dissociation disorder, which leads to mood swings and pain, as well as insomnia, constipation, diarrhea and difficulty concentrating.

Since the previous prison sentence had not deterred Chow, Lai imposed another long prison sentence on him.

The court heard that the victim ran away from home on October 20, 2019, and met Chow through a friend. The next day, they met in Tin Shui Wai at around 2am, took a taxi to pick up his seven-seater van, and Chow drove the girl to Lau Fau Shan, where he attempted to rape her.

Chow paid her HK$500, which she threw in the trash.

The car was burned in Sai Wan in December 2020 and Chow was arrested in Pat Heung in July 2021.
