Yadav, who hails from Haryana, lives alone at Santosh Bhavan in Nalasopara and works as a labourer. However, he has been unemployed for the past two months.

When Aarti, who works in a private company, was on her way to her office around 8.45 am on Tuesday morning, she was stopped by Yadav opposite SBI Bank at Gavrayi Pada in Waliv, police said.

Yadav tried to talk to her as she had not been talking to him recently and he suspected that she was in a relationship with someone else.

When Aarti did not listen to him, Rohit started arguing, according to police, later took out an industrial wrench from his bag and attacked Aarti several times.

A police official said Aarti’s body had nearly 16 assault wounds. After the incident, Yadav was sitting next to Aarti’s body.

Later, police arrived at the scene and shifted the injured woman to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. Her body was later shifted to Navghar Primary Health Centre for postmortem.

Yadav was arrested and subsequently arrested for murder. Police have seized the wrench used in the crime.

“We are in the process of documenting and recording the statements of the witnesses of the incident. The footage of the incident captured by a nearby CCTV camera has also been recorded. We will produce the accused in the court tomorrow,” said Sachin Sanap, assistant inspector and investigating officer in the case.

In the video footage of the incident, one of the many witnesses to the crime tried to stop Yadav but was unable to overpower him. When Yadav tried to attack him, he left the scene.

According to Aarti’s family, she had filed a complaint at the Achole police station on June 8, alleging that Yadav had broken her mobile phone and when she demanded money to repair the phone, he assaulted and threatened her.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Aarti’s father Ram Dular Yadav said that their family had filed a complaint against Yadav in the past when he had attacked Aarti, but the police did not take any action and only registered a non-cognizable facts (NC) case.

“If the police had intervened 10 days ago, I would not have seen this day,” said Ram Dular, who hails from Gazipur in Uttar Pradesh and runs a food stall.

Aarti was the eldest of three siblings and had got a job in a private company about a month ago.

“Everyone in my family is shocked. Aarti’s mother is very disturbed by the incident. The accused should receive the harshest punishment for this crime,” Dular said.

Waliv police said they were trying to ascertain the exact motive behind the incident after recording statements of relatives of Aarti and Yadav.
