Miami Gardens woman arrested after fatal hit-and-run accident

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida. – Police arrested a Miami Gardens woman on Monday for fleeing the scene of a fatal car crash, authorities said.

According to her police report, 26-year-old Shyteria Clarke was driving north on Northwest 47th Avenue near 188th Street on April 5 when she struck a person attempting to cross the street.

Clarke immediately ran away without stopping to help the victim, the police report says.

According to Miami Gardens police, the car was followed by a witness who called 911 and gave a description of the car and its license plate number.

The victim, whose identity was not provided in the police report, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami-Dade Fire Department.

Authorities later learned that the car was towed the next day because it caught fire.

According to the report, a man told Miami Gardens police on April 11 that he was driving the car the day it caught fire. He said smoke was coming out of the front of the car and very soon after, the car “burst into flames,” the police report states.

Police said they asked him if he had driven the car the night before and he said no. Clarke also drives the car, making it possible she was driving the night of the accident.

A review of the documents revealed that Clarke did not have a valid driver’s license, authorities said.

According to the report, police spoke with Clarke on April 12, who told them she was with the man the day of the fire. Police asked where she was the night of the accident, at which point Clarke asked for an attorney, authorities said.

According to the report, the man who was driving the car on the day of the fire told police on April 18 that he was sitting in the passenger seat of the car when the accident happened, that he had been drinking and asked Clarke to drive the car.

The man told police he felt a “bump” and thought Clarke hit the curb and not a person, police said.

According to the police report, he agreed to a controlled video and audio interview with Clarke on Monday. During the interview, he confronted Clarke about the accident and exposed her as the driver at the time of the crash, as well as providing evidence that she knew she had struck and killed the victim, authorities said.

Clarke never denied the allegations and stated that there was “nothing else” she wanted to talk to police about, the police report said.

Police then obtained a search warrant that revealed that both the man’s cellphone and Clarke’s were at the scene of the accident, authorities said.

According to the police report, police contacted Clarke and she agreed to turn herself in.

She is accused of hit-and-run following an accident resulting in death.

As of Tuesday, Clarke is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where her bail has not yet been set.
