An otherwise normal night took a tragic turn when a North Carolina Mother of six killed in drive-by shooting that could have ended much worse.

On the night of June 10, 39-year-old Latasha Cureton was sleeping in her home in Gastonia, North Carolina, while her children watched television when a loud noise that witnesses thought was fireworks interrupted the peace. according to WSOC.

Cureton’s daughter, whose identity was not disclosed, said WSOC“It was like an explosion. We thought it was a loud bang, like something had suddenly fallen into the kitchen, but there were several bangs like fireworks, but then it got louder and louder. We ran, took cover and covered the babies.”

Her son reportedly found Cureton in her bedroom after she screamed, “I’ve been hit!” None of her children were hit by any of the bullets.

More from WSOC:

Thirteen shots were fired into or through the front door. You can see outside through the holes.

A family friend said there was no safe place in the house when the shooting started.

“Everyone needs to know that there are a lot of children living in that house,” said Keith Rice. “And for someone to shoot so often or even shoot in that house is ridiculous. These people are ungodly.”

Officers are going door to door, exploring several blocks from the shooting scene, hoping to find anyone who may have seen, heard or recorded something helpful.

Since her death, Cureton’s family organized a GoFundMeto help the family “ease the financial burden and allow us to focus on grieving and remembering Tasha.”

Sydney Weaver, Cureton’s close friend, revealed in an interview with Queen City News that Cureton was in the process of planning her wedding. No arrests were made in the case.
