E-rickshaw driver arrested for ‘sexually harassing’ teenager in Delhi | Delhi News

A 27-year-old e-rickshaw driver was arrested in north Delhi for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl who got into his vehicle, police said.

DCP (North) Manoj Meena said that on June 13, information was received from Bara Hindu Rao Hospital about an assault on a 17-year-old girl. The call was forwarded to Sub-Inspector Mithilesh who was asked to take necessary action. The girl’s statement was recorded and a medical examination was conducted. The police filed a complaint under sections of the POCSO Act and started searching for the e-rickshaw driver.

The DCP said that the e-rickshaw did not have a number plate attached. “The incident took place at around 2.30 am, making it difficult to identify the vehicle or the accused from the CCTV footage. More than 150 cameras at various locations like New Delhi Railway Station were checked and the footage was analysed. We have pieced together a trail from the crime scene to Mori Gate, where he was last seen,” he said.

Another officer said the accused was finally identified based on the make and colour of his e-rickshaw. “On June 15, the accused, Mohd. Istikhar, was arrested from Mori Gate. The girl stated that she had hit the accused with a brick during the attack. This helped us confirm his identity as Istikhar had a fresh injury on his forehead.”

During questioning, police said, Istikhar told them that the girl had boarded his e-rickshaw near ISBT Kashmere Gate, but he took her to a forest area and sexually assaulted her there. “He said the injuries on his forehead and eyes occurred when the girl resisted and hit him with a brick,” DCP Meena added.
