Russia said on Tuesday that two people were killed by a mine explosion near the border with Ukraine after they ignored warning signs.

Russia has fortified its border areas during its more than two-year offensive against its smaller neighbor, and such incidents have become more frequent recently.

“Locals entered a prohibited border area despite signs warning of the danger of mines,” said Bryansk Region Governor Alexander Bogomaz.

“Unfortunately, two locals died on site as a result of a mine explosion,” he said on social media.

The incident occurred in the Klimovsky district, which borders the northern Ukrainian region of Chernigov.

Bogomaz said another person was injured and taken to a medical facility.

He called on the population to “be vigilant and not to visit areas in border settlements where there are warning signs indicating the presence of mines.”

A series of mining accidents occurred in Russia this month.
