Some Juneteenth events in the Houston area canceled or postponed

A tropical system is expected to dump heavy rain on the Houston area Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to the cancellation of some events.

HOUSTON — With the threat of heavy rain and the risk of flooding in Southeast Texas, some communities are canceling or postponing Juneteenth events scheduled for Wednesday.

A weak tropical system is expected to develop in the Bay of Campeche by Tuesday. Although there will be no landfall near Houston, the system is expected to dump heavy rain on the region Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Storm Prediction Center now includes a significant risk of flooding Wednesday in Southeast Texas.

With Juneteenth being a federal holiday, several events are planned for Wednesday in the Greater Houston area, but some have already been canceled due to weather concerns.

Houston Juneteenth Family Fun Day Canceled

“Due to impending inclement weather and safety concerns for our vendors and attendees, we have decided to cancel this year’s Juneteenth Family Fun Day, which was scheduled for Wednesday, June 19,” announced the organizers. They said Monday’s Emancipation Conversation and Tuesday’s health fair, both at Emancipation Park, should still take place.

Fort Bend County June 10 event postponed

The Town of Kendleton’s 50th annual Juneteenth celebration is postponed until further notice, Fort Bend County announced Monday. The event was scheduled for Wednesday, June 19 at Bates M. Allen Park.

Galveston Juneteenth Family Fun Day postponed

Reedy Chapel AME Church in Galveston is postponing its annual Family Fun Day from Juneteenth to Saturday, June 29 at 1 p.m. due to weather concerns. The church reenactment march will also take place on June 29.
