VSU awards honorary doctorate to campus police officer who was seriously injured in the line of duty

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Virginia State University (VSU) Police Officer Bruce Foster will be awarded an honorary degree during the university’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11.

According to VSU, an honorary degree is a high-level recognition given to those who have made significant contributions to the university.

Last semester was Officer Foster paralyzed from the waist down after a shooting occurred near campus on November 12, 2023.

“Officer Foster’s selfless actions and tireless commitment to protecting our campus make him a true hero,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M Abdullah. “It is an honor to award him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding character and bravery. He is an inspiration to all of us and we are grateful to have him as part of the VSU family.”

Former VSU archivist Lucious Edwards Jr. will also receive an honorary degree from the university. Edwards held this role from 1977 to 2013. He also served as an adjunct faculty member and chair of various committees.

VSU will hold two commencement ceremonies at the Multipurpose Center on Saturday, May 11, one beginning at 9 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. The ceremonies will be available online via Live broadcast.
