Officer convicted of on-duty rape, no longer with Royal Newfoundland Constabulary

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says an officer convicted of raping a woman while on duty in 2021 is no longer with the force.

A police spokesman could not say whether Carl Douglas Snelgrove resigned or was fired because police cannot comment publicly on personnel matters.

Snelgrove was suspended without pay in 2015 when he was first accused of sexually assaulting the woman, but he remained an officer at the RNC.

State law says the police public complaint process, which would determine whether Snelgrove loses his job, cannot begin until all legal proceedings are complete.

This happened in late February when the Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear an appeal against Snelgrove’s conviction.

Speaker Const. James Cadigan said in an interview that when the country’s highest court made its decision, the force’s public appeals process was launched and hearings were scheduled.
