8 people injured in shooting at Michigan water playground; suspect dead – WSOC TV

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — Eight people were injured Saturday when shots were fired at a suburban Detroit wading pool, authorities said. The suspected gunman is also dead, police said.

Update June 15, 11:30 p.m. EDT: An 8-year-old boy suffered head injuries and is in critical condition following the shooting at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said, The Detroit News reported.

A four-year-old boy was also injured in the thigh, but his condition is stable, the sheriff said.

The two boys are related, WJBK-TV reported. Their 39-year-old mother, who was shot in the stomach, is in critical condition, according to the television station.

“Not even in my worst nightmares could I imagine standing here talking about another shooting,” Bouchard said at a late-night press conference.

Sheriff: Suspected shooter dead

Update June 15, 10:43 p.m. EDT: According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the man suspected of opening fire at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan, is dead, WXYZ-TV reported. Authorities said the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office also said eight people – including two children – were injured when the gunman opened fire, the Detroit Free Press reported. According to the Associated Press, authorities had originally said “nine or 10” people were injured, but that number was revised after consulting area hospitals.

At least 9 or 10 injured

Update 7:53 p.m. EDT, June 15: During a news conference Saturday, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said “nine, maybe 10” people were injured at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The youngest victim was 8 years old, the sheriff told reporters.

“This is a punch in the gut,” Bouchard said. “We don’t fully comprehend what happened in Oxford (in 2021, a shooting occurred at Oxford High School that killed four students and injured seven others), and now we are dealing with another tragedy.”

The sheriff said the shooting was believed to be random. Bouchard added that the gunman “got out of a car and opened fire” at the water park around 5:11 p.m. EDT.

He added that the shooter reloaded several times. Bouchard said a 9mm Glock semi-automatic pistol was found at the scene. Investigators found three empty magazines and the sheriff said as many as 28 shots may have been fired.

Bouchard said the suspect was detained “nearby” in a residence.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett told reporters. “Our thoughts are with the families right now.”

“Fathers should not spend Father’s Day in the hospital,” Republican U.S. Rep. John James of Farmington Hills, who represents the district, told reporters.

“Numerous injured victims”

Update 7:38 p.m. EDT, June 15: The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said on social media that the area around the wading pool “is still an active crime scene and we may be able to detain the suspect nearby, but we have asked people to stay away from the area for now.”

“We have numerous injured victims.”

“There are several injuries,” Rochester police said in a Facebook post.
