SILER CITY, NC (WNCN) — A plane crash in Chatham County on Friday left two people dead, according to NC State Highway Patrol officials.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced at 12:50 p.m. on Friday that a single-engine Piper PA-28 plane crashed near Siler City Municipal Airport. Two people were on board and are dead.

The plane’s flight plan indicated that it was coming from the Sanford area and was expected to land in Siler City at approximately 1:15 p.m. The plane belonged to Executive Flight Training and Services.

A nearby witness called 911 after seeing “black smoke” rising from the plane.

FAA officials arrived on the scene around 3 p.m. and will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash. A preliminary investigation report with the findings is expected early next week.
