Kannapolis man charged with murder after shooting left one dead

KANNAPOLIS – A Kannapolis man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with a shooting that left one man dead Monday.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. Monday when Kannapolis police officers were called to a home in the 1900 block of Lane Street where shots had been fired, according to a city news release.

When officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly found 43-year-old Ebony Gill suffering from a gunshot wound. The press release states that Gill died at the scene from her injuries.

According to the press release, the shooting occurred during an argument between several people in the house.

Jawaren Brion Smith, 18, was arrested with the help of local residents after attempting to flee the scene, the release said. He was charged with first-degree murder and taken to the Cabarrus County Detention Center without bail, online jail records show.
