TWO sex offenders who took turns raping a 76-year-old woman have each been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The couple, aged 23 and 21, recently appeared before Plumtree Magistrates Court where they were convicted and sentenced to prison terms.

According to the state’s account, the two defendants broke into the victim’s home around midnight on May 28, 2024, where she was sleeping with her seven-year-old twin granddaughters.

“They entered the plaintiff’s bedroom through the window before attacking and strangling her. Her granddaughters were awakened by the noise when she resisted.

“The first accused attacked the children before they managed to escape to the neighbour’s house. The accused forced the complainant to lie on the bed before raping her,” said a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of ZImbabwe (NPAZ).

The first defendant left the room while his accomplice raped the elderly lady.

The second accused allegedly fainted after the heinous act, which led to the arrest of his citizens by the public.

A report was filed with the police and the first defendant was subsequently arrested.
