3-year-old boy killed in stabbing in supermarket parking lot

A mother is mourning the loss of her three-year-old son after she and her toddler were stabbed in an apparently random attack at an Ohio grocery store.

In a news release Tuesday, June 4, North Olmsted Police Detective Sergeant Matt Beck said 32-year-old Bionca Ellis of Cleveland was arrested in connection with the crime. She is accused of stabbing 3-year-old Julian Wood of North Olmsted and his mother Margot Wood, 38.

Julian and Margot were both taken to St. John’s Medical Center for treatment, but the child died from injuries sustained in the attack. His mother was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive, the release said.

According to Fox 8, Ellis was charged with aggravated murder after being arraigned via video from jail on Tuesday afternoon. The news outlet adds that her bail has been set at $1 million.

According to Beck, on Monday, June 3, around 3 p.m. local time, North Olmsted Dispatch received several 911 calls reporting a black woman dressed all in black stabbing people in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle grocery store at 27264 Lorain Road.

“The investigation into the motive for this attack is ongoing, but everything known so far indicates that this was a random act of violence. Ellis and the victims had no contact with each other prior to this incident,” the press release states.

According to Fox 8, Beck said surveillance video shows Ellis obtaining a kitchen knife from a nearby Volunteers of America store before the attack.

In addition, video footage shows Ellis walking into the supermarket, where she passed Margot and Julian. She then followed them out of the supermarket to their car with the knife in her hand and repeatedly stabbed the mother and her young son, Beck said.

While Margot is “expected to make a full recovery,” Beck said her emotional trauma will likely haunt her “for the rest of her life.”

North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones expressed her condolences on Tuesday.

“This was a terrible tragedy for our entire community. As the mayor of North Olmsted and a mother myself, I cannot imagine what this family must be going through. To lose their youngest child in such a violent and senseless way is absolutely heartbreaking. I know all the residents of North Olmsted stand with me in their deep grief,” Jones said in a statement shared on the official City of North Olmsted X account (formerly Twitter).

“We all deeply mourn their loss and I ask everyone to keep them in their thoughts and prayers. Our police department continues its ongoing investigation into the crime as we seek to heal the wounds and move forward. I commend all of our law enforcement personnel for their compassion and quick response in the wake of this situation,” she continued.

According to police, Ellis was walking toward Dover Center Road and was still carrying the kitchen knife used in the attack when she was arrested without resistance and taken to the North Olmsted Jail.

Although Ellis had been arrested several times before, none of his arrests before Monday were for violent crimes.
