Details on the investigation of puppies thrown into dumpsters

OPELUSAS, Louisiana (KLFY) – Two puppies are now safe and ready for a new home after surveillance cameras at Sebastian’s West End Seafood The dog owners were filmed throwing the dogs into a garbage container.

“On Sunday morning, I got a call from a neighbor who happened to be passing by and heard a noise and my dumpster. Out of curiosity, he looked in to see what it was and saw a puppy. And when he got closer, he saw that there were two puppies,” says store owner Sharon Sebastien.

Sebastien says that when she learned that the dogs had been put in the dumpster, she found the security camera footage and sent it to the town hall, whereupon town investigator Spencer Cornette was able to review the footage and begin searching for the suspects. “So we went door to door, to most of the homes in the area, and no one seemed to know the two suspects.”

However, things changed for the better when the St. Landry Parish Council posted a photo of the suspects on social media. “And then within about an hour we received a tip.”

When the tip came in, the suspects were identified as Jasmine Mouton and Kendall Tyler, according to Cornette. Cornette, along with Parish President Jessie Bellard, went directly to the suspects’ residence and arrested them. “Both individuals were arrested for aggravated animal cruelty. They were both booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail,” Cornette said.

“I don’t know what provoked her, but that dog is acceptable. That kind of thing shouldn’t be acceptable anywhere. You know, luckily we have the video, so she can’t say she didn’t do it,” Bellard says.

A new home has been found for the puppies. In the meantime, they will be housed by one of the employees at Sebastian’s West End Seafood.
