The Atlantic hurricane season begins today

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Atlantic hurricane season begins today and meteorologists expect it to be an active season.

HURRICANE FORECAST

CSU’s 2024 outlook calls for an extremely active hurricane season with 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes. Colorado State never predicted more than 19 named storms or 9 hurricanes in its initial forecast. NOAA predicts 17-25 named storms, 8-13 hurricanes and 4-7 major hurricanes. An average hurricane season typically produces 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes, 3 of which are Category 3 or higher.

WHY WILL IT BE ACTIVE?

The ingredients for an active hurricane season are already apparent. In the main developing region of the Atlantic, water temperatures are near mid-August levels. Add in record-high water temperatures and the developing La Niña pattern, and all signs point to a busy season ahead. With La Niña, more tropical development is likely due to the lack of wind shear in the Atlantic. Less wind shear and warmer water temperatures act as a breeding ground for tropical waves and storms during the peak of hurricane season.

What we need to pay attention to

As we approach the start of hurricane season, there are a few areas to keep an eye on. The main developing areas for early season activity tend to be concentrated near the Gulf of Mexico, and there are some local developments off the southeast coast as well. Looking ahead, the state of Colorado will release an updated forecast on June 11. NOAA will also update its forecast later this summer.
