11-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl from Illinois killed in crash in LaPorte County

LAPORTE COUNTY, Indiana – According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, two children were killed in a traffic accident because the vehicle they were traveling in ignored a stop sign.

The fatal accident occurred around 12:42 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Joliet Road and CR 900 West in LaPorte County.


Officials said a black 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer pulling a U-Haul trailer was traveling south on CR 900 West while a red 2011 Ford F250 pickup truck was traveling east on Joliet Road. According to the sheriff’s office, the Chevrolet ignored the stop sign at the intersection and collided with the Ford.

An 11-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl who were in the Chevrolet were pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the two children have not yet been determined.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 41-year-old Luis De Leon Muniz, and two other passengers, a 36-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, suffered upper body injuries and were taken to the hospital. The 16-year-old was flown by helicopter to a regional hospital.

All passengers in the Chevrolet are from Justice, Illinois.

The driver of the Ford, identified as 47-year-old Casey L. Krivak of La Porte, suffered upper body injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The results of toxicology tests are pending. Police have not provided any further information at this time.
