“Couldn’t even brush my teeth for two months…”: Pant recalls his injuries after a car accident

“Couldn’t even brush my teeth for two months…”: Pant recalls his injuries after a car accident

Pant appeared on the second episode of ‘Dhawan Karenge’, a talk show hosted by Indian opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan on JioCinema on Monday. In the episode, the 26-year-old cricketer shared his experience after suffering life-threatening injuries in a horrific accident in which he suffered multiple fractures and required ligament reconstruction and treatment for a knee injury. These injuries were crucial to his career but he recently made his comeback in the IPL 2024 after a 15-month rehabilitation.

Rishabh talks about his experience after the injury, “Self-belief and confidence are very important while recovering from an injury because people around you say all kinds of things and as an individual you have to think about what is good for you. The accident was a life-changing experience for me. When I got up after that, I was not even sure if I would be alive but God was kind enough to save me. I could not even brush my teeth for two months and for six to seven months I was in unbearable pain. I could not go to the airport because I was nervous about facing people in wheelchairs.”

He added: “Now that I am making my comeback in cricket, I not only feel pressure but I am excited. This is like a second life for me so I am excited but also nervous.”

Pant also revealed that there was an incident in his life that made his mother angry. It happened when he was in fifth grade. His father brought him a cricket bat worth 14,000 and his mother was “super angry” about his father’s gift to his son.

“It was my father’s dream to become a cricketer and I am glad that I was able to fulfil it. I decided to become a cricketer when I was in 5th grade. My father gave me a bat worth 14,000, and my mom got super mad,” he said.

In the recently concluded IPL 2024, Rishabh’s team Delhi Capitals finished sixth with seven wins, seven losses and 14 points and failed to make it to the playoffs. He scored 446 runs in 13 matches with a strike rate of over 155 and three half-centuries and emerged as the team’s leading run-getter.

Now Pant will make his comeback to international cricket at the ICC T20 World Cup, which begins on June 1 in the West Indies and the USA.
