Howard County police said they recovered around 15,000 stolen construction tools, estimated to be worth between $3 million and $5 million.

The investigation began in late January. Police said a tracking device from a stolen tool led officers to a storage unit in Elkridge. Since then, the investigation has resulted in search warrants being obtained at 12 different locations. That’s how officers were able to find the thousands of tools.

According to WCDW, investigators believe the tools were stolen from cars, stores, homes and construction sites in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, police said.

The theft of all the tools was probably part of a plot that has developed into one of the “largest and most extensive” theft cases in the area, the news agency reported.

Police said no charges have been filed yet. So far, more than 80 victims have been identified and investigators believe there are hundreds more.

“This case sends a clear message: We will not tolerate criminal activity operating here in Howard County,” said Police Chief Der. “I want to thank the detectives of our Special Investigations Division and all of the officers who assisted in this tremendous and unprecedented case. They have put in thousands of hours and have many more to go. They will persevere to the end.”

“Howard County is a community where all residents should be safe and feel secure, and we have just taken another big step toward achieving that goal,” said County Executive Ball. “This case demonstrates the tenacity of our police in their investigations and pursuit of justice.”
