Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter crash

IRAN (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter crash, according to Iranian state media.

According to Iranian officials, the crash also killed the country’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and all other passengers on board.

According to Iranian state media, President Raisi was returning from an event on the country’s border with Azerbaijan when the country landed hard in a mountainous area.

State media reported that there were “no signs of life” at the crash site. It happened on Sunday near the village of Tavil in northwestern Iran.

Poor weather conditions and the inaccessibility of the area hampered search and rescue operations for several hours.

Turkey and Russia sent planes to help with the search operations.

Raisi was elected president in 2021 after failing to take office in 2017.
