The heat is increasing and the storms return on Thursday evening

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – These have been quite a long few days for fans of summer weather. Temperatures continue to be well above normal in early May, with afternoon temperatures rising back to around 90 degrees today. The morning clouds quickly disappear and are replaced by a full blast of May sunshine as the day progresses. We mention the small chance of a rain shower or storm, but the vast majority of us stay dry.

Tomorrow there will be a doubling of the preview for Summer. The temperatures are getting even hotter; We forecast highs in the 89 to 94 degree range for the southern half of the state. Here too, the likelihood of a shower or storm remains very low.

Check out the latest live and local weather below, available to stream on WSFA Weather Now! Please note that this stream does not contain live severe weather coverage, only data on the latest weather conditions.

Several groups of thunderstorms will hit the Southeast at times Thursday and Friday – not all of them will hit central Alabama, but one or two of them will hit us. Heavy rain, thunder, lightning and gusty winds are likely with these storms, and the heaviest cores could produce damaging wind gusts and possibly large hail in some locations. The tornado risk appears to be low due to the lack of low-level wind shear, but we will keep an eye on new data as we get closer. At this point we are at greatest risk of storms overnight and early Friday morning.

It should be raining and rumbling by midday Friday at the latest, with a rapid clearing trend and a dash of cooler, more pleasant air for the weekend. We will reach temperatures in the upper 50s Friday evening, while Saturday afternoon temperatures will remain in the upper 70s across most of our areas. The weather will continue to be sunny and pleasant on Mother’s Day, and no rain is expected. Enjoy!
