The US State Department warns of the threat of international terrorism to the LGBT community

The US State Department issued a global security alert on Friday, saying it was aware of the increased potential for violence against LGBTQ+ people and events inspired by foreign terrorist organizations.

“Due to the possibility of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the State Department advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution,” the department said in a statement.

The warning comes two weeks before the start of LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the United States.

Stigma and discrimination

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that people in the LGBTQI+ community “continue to face insidious forms of stigma and discrimination.”

He continued: “Even as more countries make significant progress towards full equality, LGBTQI+ people continue to be sentenced to death for daring to express their sexual orientation or gender identity, subjected to forced conversion “therapies” and Subjected to “normalization” operations and thereby discriminated against. “Use of health services, restriction of the exercise of fundamental freedoms and rejection of the dignity of a same-sex partnership and the realization of the family.”

Blinken concluded his statement by saying: “We will continue to advocate for the rights of LGBTQI+ people, not only because we have a moral imperative to do so, but because it helps strengthen democracy, strengthen national security and to promote global health and economic development.”
