The woman killed in Monday afternoon’s single-vehicle crash on Sugar Camp Road in Gamble Township was Meralea Cook, 40, of Lake Road, Trout Run, Lycoming County, Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. said.

Cook was pronounced dead at the scene after her northbound SUV left the road, plunged down an embankment and struck three trees, state police said. The impact destroyed the vehicle, flipped it over and ended up heading south, police said.

There were no witnesses to the accident, which was discovered and reported by a passerby around 3:15 p.m., said Kießling.

Investigators believed Cook was on his way home, which was only about two miles from the crash site.

Regarding Saturday afternoon’s crash on Route 220 in Muncy Township, Kiessling ruled that William Messersmith, 87, of Montoursville, suffered a fatal heart attack while behind the wheel just before his pickup left the road and struck a tree. Kiessling ruled that Messersmith died of natural causes.
