Daniel Ducharme, 31, of South Hadley, Massachusetts, was found dead by police officers outside his vehicle near the woods on southbound Route 91 near the 30.8 mile mark around 11 a.m. Sunday, reported WFXT.

Police believe a bear seen near the accident site tried to pull Ducharme’s body from the rubble. Police believe the man was partially or completely thrown from the car in the accident, WFXT reported.

According to the news station, Ducharme’s heavily damaged 2016 Honda Civic was not far away. Police suspected Ducharme was killed when he lost control of the car and crashed into a guardrail and several trees.

“There is evidence that the bear made contact with the victim’s body at some point,” state police wrote in a news release.

When first responders arrived on scene, the bear fled the area, police said.

The area where the crash occurred, Hatfield, Massachusetts, is about five miles northeast of Northampton.
