Man, 26, killed after truck flees police then crashes in Burlington, Ont.

A 26-year-old man died after a truck carrying four people crashed onto a ramp while attempting to evade Halton police early Monday morning, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.

At approximately 3:45 a.m. ET, police stopped the driver of the pickup truck for speeding on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) highway at the Guelph Line in Burlington, SIU spokeswoman Kristy Denette wrote in a media statement. The driver then fled from the police.

The truck was found at the Brant Street exit after an accident, the SIU said. Police said the collision sent those in the vehicle to the hospital. One died. It was uncertain who was behind the wheel.

The exit will be open again on Monday afternoon

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CBC Hamilton that the ramp was reopened early Monday afternoon after several hours of investigation.

The SIU began its investigation on Monday. The police watchdog investigates incidents involving police officers, Niagara Parks Commission special constables or peace officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the firing of a weapon at someone.

According to the Department of Transport, a separate afternoon collision nearby, on the QEW at Waterdown Road, had blocked two left eastbound lanes.
