Trial against serial rapist is set to begin in August

The trial of a former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) security officer described as the Daveyton/Thembisa serial rapist is scheduled for August 26 to September 20.

The 38-year-old made another brief appearance in the Benoni Regional Court on May 7, where it was confirmed that charges had been laid and the matter would be referred to the Gauteng Division of the High Court, sitting in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.

He is currently facing 145 charges including 44 counts of rape, 43 charges of kidnapping, 41 charges of pointing a firearm and 17 other charges including fraud, obstruction of justice, forcing a sexual act and breaching the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995 and violating the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

He is believed to have been active between 2018 and his eventual arrest on January 22, 2023.

The arrest followed a joint investigation by SAPS Benoni and Tembisa Family Violence and Child

Safeguarding and Sexual Offenses Units (FCS).

160 witnesses are expected to testify, including victims.
