Two Ukrainian hydroelectric power plants were shut down after Russian attacks

Two hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine were shut down after a major attack by Russian forces.

The May 8 attack targeted energy infrastructure in several regions of Ukraine, including Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Kirovohrad, Poltava, Vinnytsia and Zaporizhia. Ukraine’s largest energy supplier, DTEK, also noted that several thermal power plants were damaged in the attack.

As of May 10, it was not announced which specific plants were shut down.

A Telegram statement from Ukrainian state energy company Ukrhydroenergo said: “Hydroelectric power plants were severely damaged in the morning shelling of critical infrastructure. “Russia continues to massively attack and destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with devastating targeted attacks.”

Ukrhydroenergo also highlighted the extent of the damage and called on world leaders to offer their support, adding: “Today, all hydropower generation has suffered significant damage. The destroyed equipment requires significant effort to repair and restore, as well as significant financial resources. The international community’s effective support and decisive action are now more important than ever.”

Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces have repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. An attack in June 2023 destroyed the Nova Kakhovka Dam in southern Ukraine, an event that led to mass flooding in the region and raised concerns about the future of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which previously received water from the dam’s reservoir for its cooling ponds.

Recently, on May 5, Russian forces attacked the Slovyansk thermal power plant with five missiles, following attacks on four other thermal power plants on April 27.

A main target was the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since 2022. In April 2024, one of its six reactors was damaged by a drone attack. Nevertheless, Russia has expressed its intention to restart the nuclear power plant, which has been shut down since September 2022, in December 2024.
