85-year-old woman raped and murdered by 35-year-old drunk man in Bareilly | Lucknow News

BAREILLY: An 85-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered by a 35-year-old drunk man in a village in Hafizganj, Bareilly on Monday.

According to police, the octogenarian died during the sexual assault and the man was charged under sections 333 (trespassing with intent to cause injury) and 66 (rape causing death or sustained vegetative state) of the BNS. He was later arrested.

The woman, from a minority community, was living alone after the death of her husband and eldest son. Her sister-in-law and other relatives live in the same area and were taking care of her. On Monday afternoon, Rakesh Kumar, who lives in the same village, entered her house, locked the room and raped her.

Her sister, who visited her daily, said, “I met her and she told me she needed food and water. When I arrived with water after some time, I found the house locked from inside. I asked my daughter and the neighbour’s son to open the door after climbing down from the roof. When they entered, they saw Kumar sexually abusing them. We alerted the neighbours and he was caught.”

A local resident added: “People from both communities caught and beat up Kumar before handing him over to the police. He is a potter and is drunk most of the time.”

Deputy SP Mukesh Chandra Mishra said, “SHO Hafizganj received a complaint that an 85-year-old woman was raped by a villager. As a result of the sexual assault, the woman died. We have arrested the accused and are questioning him. The body has been sent for autopsy and a report is awaited. People in the village are angry but the situation is under control.”
