High school volleyball coach dies in bizarre accident at rooftop bar

A popular high school volleyball and track coach has died after a bizarre accident on a rooftop bar.

Ayden Rose Burt, 28, was shot shortly after midnight on Tuesday (July 23).

She had just spent a pleasant evening at the Smoke Skybar in San Antonio when she was hit in the back by a “random” bullet.

Burt was taken to hospital but unfortunately succumbed to the injuries she sustained.

Burt was a coach in the Jasper Independent School District, but was already in the area when he attended the Texas High School Coaches Association’s coaching school.

According to police, it is believed that she was sitting on the roof terrace with her back to the highway when the ricochet went off.

Authorities said they are currently unsure where the bullet came from or why it was fired, but they are currently searching for possible suspects.

“Ayden has been teaching in Jasper ISD since 2019, teaching English at both Jasper High School and Jasper Jr. High, and also serves as a cheerleading sponsor and coach.

“We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family and staff at this time.”

Meanwhile, Smoke Skybar owner Adrian Martinez also wrote on Facebook: “I am deeply saddened that a person attending an event at our venue was the victim of a random and senseless act of violence. Words cannot express the sadness I feel over this loss.”
